Four years after the end of World War I, Albert Einstein's tour of war ruins in France was used as a call for peace. The "most powerful brain in the world"—but not yet a link to the nuclear age—visited the region of Dormans and saw the extraordinary devastation wrought by militarism. The scientist is quoted as saying that all the students in the world should visit these ruins.
