Reader Registration
How to access the Getty Library
Before your visit to the Getty Library, here is what you need to know:
The Getty Library is open to anyone working on a personal or professional project that would benefit from the use of its general or special collections.
To use the Getty Library, register as a Library Reader. Same-day registration is available at the Library Reference Desk on the Getty Research Institute Plaza level (bring a government-issued photo ID). Or, plan your visit in advance by filling out a Getty Library Request Form.
*Note that applications for Stack Readers and Extended Readers have additional requirements. Learn about the different Reader types below. The majority of the library’s collections are held in off-site storage at the Library Annex. Request these off-site materials in advance of your visit to ensure their availability. Registered Readers can request material via the Library Catalog.
The Getty Library is non-circulating, meaning the books must remain in the building at all times and cannot be taken home. However, books may be checked out and left on the Reserve Shelves to be consulted on repeat visits.
Some items are digitized and freely available to the public. Use the Library Catalog to find items relevant to your research.
Access to the Getty Library’s special collections is by appointment only and may sometimes require at least 2 weeks’ advance notice. Make sure to confirm your appointment to use the Special Collections Reading Room before finalizing any travel arrangements.
