About
Goal
Co-owned with Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), the Johnson Publishing Company Archive is one of the most significant collections relating to 20th-century Black America. Containing nearly 5 million photographs, 5,000 magazines, 10,000 audio and visual recordings, and 200 boxes of business records, this vast resource will be a foundation for research, training, publications, interpretive programming, and digital access projects.
Outcomes
In partnership with NMAAHC, Getty has committed $30 million toward the following:
- cataloging and digitizing the photograph, audio visual, and magazine collections
- making the collection accessible online for public access and research
- offering a series of workshops introducing students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to conservation as a career path
Additionally, Getty will create learning and research opportunities to further knowledge and advance understanding of the JPC Archive.
