THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM ANNOUNCES
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS

LOS ANGELES—The J. Paul Getty Museum announces today the appointment of John Giurini to the position of Assistant Director for Public Affairs effective November 1.  In this capacity, he will be responsible for the Museum’s communications activities and will work with the J. Paul Getty Trust’s communication group to implement the Museum’s communications strategies, both internally and externally.  Giurini will also spearhead the development of long-term strategies for building stronger local, national and international awareness of the Museum and its collections, exhibitions, and special programs.  As part of the Museum’s senior management team, Giurini will report to Michael Brand, director of the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Giurini, who will move from the J. Paul Getty Trust, where he has served as assistant director of communications and special projects since 2005, has been responsible for overseeing the Getty’s media relations efforts and several high-profile projects, including the communications efforts for the reopening of the Getty Villa.  Just prior to joining the Getty, he was an independent communications consultant working with several national and international clients, including the J. Paul Getty Trust.

“John has shown great enthusiasm and passion for the Museum’s mission as well as its collection and public programs and I believe he will make a great addition to our senior team, bringing a fresh perspective and helping us establish a strategic vision for the institution and the way in which it communicates with our various audiences,” said Michael Brand.

Ron Hartwig, vice president of communications for the J. Paul Getty Trust added, “John has gained the trust and respect of everyone at the Getty.  His move to the Museum will allow him to focus on an area of the Getty’s overall mission in which he is very interested.  I believe John’s presence on the Museum staff will enhance our ability to more effectively support the Museum’s full breadth of programming.”

Prior to his experience as an independent consultant, Giurini worked for three different Los Angeles communications consulting firms: Manning, Selvage & Lee (Vice President, 2000-2002); The Blaze Company (Vice President, 1996-2000); and Golin/Harris Communications (Senior Account Supervisor, 1990-1996).  In addition to overseeing programs for several non-profit organizations, he worked on campaigns for Starbucks Coffee Company, adidas USA, Mattel, Crystal Cruises and America West Airlines, amongst others.  He began his communications career in the public relations office of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.  Giurini holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles, a master’s degree, also in political science, from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, and he completed all coursework for a certificate in public relations from UCLA Extension.
