On the occasion of the Getty Museum presenting Manet's painting A Bar at the Folies-Bergere on loan from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 2007, writer Adam Gopnik offered a personal and historical explanation of the significance of Manet. Gopnik described how his opinion of Manet changed from thinking the artist was merely a typographical mistake for Monet, to seeing him as the quintessentially modern French artist. Gopnik's observations take on renewed significance as the Getty puts its recent acquisition, Manet's Portrait of Madame Brunet, on view.
