The Museum's collection of Old Master drawings (European works from the late 1300s to the 1800s) has been part of numerous exhibitions at the Getty Museum. But these old and fragile sheets often have condition issues resulting from centuries of handling, display, and improper storage by collectors. While curators at the Museum assess the qualities of a drawing, conservators evaluate condition and, when necessary, treat them in order to reveal the artist's original intent. Nancy Yocco, associate conservator of drawings, the J. Paul Getty Museum, describes several instances in which she has restored drawings exhibited at the Getty Museum by filling losses, reducing stains, and repairing tears. She also reveals some of the secrets she has discovered in the process.
