Tiberius Caesar ruled the Roman Empire from AD 14–37; he was the greatest general, master of 30 legions and tens of millions of people, and chief priest of Rome. Yet his own world was dominated by the heroes of Greek mythology. He tormented the learned men around him with such questions as “Who was Hecuba’s mother?” and “What was Achilles’ name among the maidens?” What did Greek myths mean to Tiberius and why did he value them so much? Historian Edward Champlin of Princeton University examines the emperor’s character by exploring the roles that legendary figures played in his public life and private dreams.

This program complements the exhibition Tiberius: Portrait of an Emperor on view through March 3, 2014.
