In recent years, thinking about images in the margins of medieval manuscripts—the "outer limits"—has moved to center stage. Marginal images have often been treated as inexplicable aberrations of the high spirituality of the 13th and 14th centuries. Yet, whether monstrous, grotesque, genre, parodic, chivalric, or religious in theme, marginal images are considered by Lucy Freeman Sandler, the Helen Gould Sheppard Professor of Art History, emerita, New York University, as in fact worthy of consideration as deeply characteristic of the medieval view of the world. Complements the exhibition Gothic Grandeur: Manuscript Illumination, 1200-1350
