Ancient bronzes, National Archaeolgical Museum, Naples
With its rich collections and the abundance of objects excavated at Herculaneum, Pompeii, and other sites in the Bay of Naples between the end of eighteenth and the first half of nineteenth centuries, the Royal Bourbon Museum–now the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy–served as a laboratory for the study and presentation of archaeological finds. Art historian Andrea Milanese discusses the history of the museum and explores the approaches to restoring ancient artifacts.

This lecture is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Apollo from Pompeii: Investigating an Ancient Bronze on view at the Getty Villa through September 12, 2011.
