In this lecture, Patrick Bowe, historian and co-author of the new book Gardens and Plants of the Getty Villa, discusses ancient Roman gardens, how they inspired the diverse plantings at the Getty Villa, and their continuing relevance in contemporary landscape design.

About Patrick Bowe
Patrick Bowe is a garden designer and historian based in Dublin, Ireland. For more than 30 years he has written and contributed to numerous publications on garden history, including Gardens of the Roman World (Getty Publications, 2004); led dozens of garden tours to Italy, Greece and other Mediterranean countries; and lectured extensively on garden design, architecture, and history. For seven years, he was designer and consultant on the restoration and development of the garden at Sutton Place, England, once the home of J. Paul Getty.

Planning your visit

Thursday, June 23
The main gate on Pacific Coast Highway opens to ticketed guests at 6:00 p.m. The auditorium opens at 7:00 p.m., and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The galleries and Museum Store will be open before and after the lecture. A selection of light dinner fare as well as beer and wine are available for purchase at the Cafe until 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 25
The Getty Villa and its galleries are open to the general public from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. With a lecture ticket, you may arrive up to one hour prior to the start time of the program. For earlier arrival, a separate general admission ticket is recommended. The auditorium opens at 1:30 p.m. and seating is on a first-come, first served basis. The Cafe is open for lunch service from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Museum Store is open until 5:30 p.m.
