Simone Martini was an artist whose fame during his own lifetime reached mythical heights. Today, at a distance of seven centuries, his paintings are still full of surprises. Diving into the world of this celebrated painter from Siena, Laura Llewellyn, curator of paintings at the Getty Museum, unlocks some of the mysteries surrounding the Getty's Saint Luke the Evangelist, a painting which, like many of the earliest paintings in the museum, is a fragment of a larger work of art. Shining a spotlight on this jewel in the Getty's collection helps to answer key questions that modern viewers may have when looking at early Renaissance paintings: How were they made? Who were they for? What can physical clues tell us about where they come from? And, what is their enduring appeal?
