Hades abducting Persephone
Recently excavated aristocratic tombs in Macedonia (northern Greece) preserve rare examples of Greek wall painting from the late classical and early Hellenistic periods, around 350-200 B.C. Art historian Olga Palagia surveys the imagery of these frescoes and their relation to Macedonian society. She examines painting techniques and evaluates ancient literary sources that attribute various innovations to artists that were active in the lifetime and perhaps in the court of Alexander the Great.
