Art historian and classical scholar Nigel McGilchrist describes the joys, trials, and tribulations of seven years of walking, riding, sailing, climbing, and even swimming the seventy inhabited Greek Islands while preparing the recently updated edition of the Blue Guide Greece: The Aegean Islands. He explores the idea that the islands of Greece and their extraordinary land- and seascapes fostered a particular way of looking at the world, engendering fundamental revolutions in ancient art, science, and politics, giving rise to what today is referred to as Western culture.

About Nigel McGilchrist
Nigel McGilchrist is an art historian who has lived and worked in Italy, Greece, and Turkey for almost thirty years. During his career, he served as director of the Anglo-Italian Institute in Rome, taught at the University of Rome, and was dean of European Studies for Rhodes College and the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. He worked as an external consultant for the Italian Government's Ministry of Arts in fresco conservation when the Vatican embarked on its cleaning of the Sistine Chapel. Today he lectures widely in art and archaeology at museums and institutions both in Europe and in the United States. McGilchrist is also on the board of editors of the Blue Guides series, the world's oldest English-language cultural and artistic guides, and has contributed to several new editions on Italy. Over the last seven years he has walked every path and village of the inhabited Greek Islands for the new Blue Guide of its archaeology, history, and ecology, which was released in September 2010. He lives near Orvieto, Italy, where he produces his own olive oil and red wine.
