For centuries, the Persian king Cyrus the Great has enjoyed a remarkable reputation. Ancient Greek texts, particularly Xenophon's Cyropaedia, were greatly influential in presenting him as an ideal ruler, while the Old Testament celebrated him for allowing the Jews to return from exile and rebuild their temple. The discovery of the Cyrus Cylinder in 1879 provided support—in Cyrus's own words—for his legacy, and continues to attract new layers of significance.

At this one-day symposium, experts discuss a range of perspectives from which the Cyrus Cylinder and the Achaemenid Empire more broadly have been understood. Papers will explore the meaning and context of Cyrus's inscription, the diverse interactions between the Persians, their subjects and their opponents, and the representation of Cyrus in modern Iran.

Speakers:
  • Irving Finkel, British Museum, London
  • Ali Mousavi, University of California, Los Angeles
  • Gregory Nagy, Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies, Washington D.C.
  • Timothy Potts, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles
  • Matthew W. Stolper, Oriental Institute, University of Chicago
