In this interdisciplinary symposium, scholars explore the status of imagery in 12th-century thought and devotion. The program examines the literary and historical contexts of images in a range of media, whether rendered in glass, painted in books, or constructed in the mind's eye. Scholars present focused studies on stained glass and manuscripts while incorporating broader theoretical ideas about the readership, interpretation, and prevailing attitudes toward pictures in English religious and literary cultures.

This symposium complements the Canterbury and St. Albans: Treasures from Church and Cloister exhibition
