OSCI Final Report

The Foundation recently released a final report for the Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative, or OSCI as it has come to be known. In 2009, we launched OSCI with the goals of rethinking the museum scholarly collection catalogue for the digital age and helping museums work together to transition to online publishing. Today these aims have been met; all eight partner museums completed their initial OSCI publications and have additional catalogues in the works. Museum Catalogues in the Digital Age is intended as a resource for the field as more and more museums make the move to online publishing. Report contents include lessons learned, three approaches to online publishing developed by the OSCI cohort, and remaining challenges facing the field.

PST: LA/LA Grants for Performing Arts

At the beginning of the year, the Getty Foundation announced that Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA will go outside the walls of museums with major grants for performing arts programs awarded to the LA Phil, the Music Center, and USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Among the offerings are a Hollywood Bowl concert for the launch of PST: LA/LA in mid-September, a ten-day music festival in Walt Disney Concert Hall entitled CDMX (Ciudad de Mexico), a festival of Cuban music and dance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Grand Park, and Musical Interventions, a series of public events organized by USC Annenberg historian of popular music Dr. Josh Kun. The announcement coincided with a kick-off event for PST: LA/LA at NeueHouse Hollywood featuring a performance by Latin Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Ceci Bastida.

New Publication for the City Palace, Udaipur

A new publication, Living Heritage of Mewar, forms the culmination of a series of Foundation grants that supported conservation planning for the City Palace Complex of Udaipur. The site is a consummate model of medieval Rajput architecture combined with later Mughal additions, and Getty funding supported the creation of an overall conservation strategy for the site to replace earlier piecemeal renovations. The resulting conservation plan included exemplary documentation, a plan for future use given the site's high visitor volume, and emergency structural stabilization work. The project also involved training for architectural students in the preparation of the working drawings and a risk management workshop for the historic site managers and staff of the City Palace Complex.

CAA-Getty International Program

A strong contingent of international scholars attended the College Art Association conference last month thanks to the CAA-Getty International Program supported by grants from the Foundation. In its first five years, the program served 90 professionals from 41 countries. For the 2017 conference, organizers selected 20 alumni to participate in a reunion program during the conference, which included a series of four "Global Conversations" featuring panel discussions with alumni and distinguished scholars from the US. The sessions were well-attended and sparked lively debates about a wide-range of issues facing the practice of art history outside of the US and Western Europe. CAA plans to make all of the papers available on its website.
