New Grants for Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA

The Getty Foundation recently announced $8.45 million in exhibition grants to 43 organizations across Southern California for Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a region-wide exploration of Latin American and Latino art opening September 2017. This support builds on $5.5 million in planning and research grants previously awarded to participating institutions, which enabled hundreds of scholars, artists, and critics to complete significant original research. The results of their collaborative research will be evident in the forthcoming exhibitions and catalogues, which cover a wide array of topics—from Chicano art activists to Latin American video art pioneers to kinetic art—through monographic studies of individual artists and broad surveys that cut across numerous countries.

MOSAIKON Training Continues with Two Programs

Mosaics restorers from North Africa and the Middle East are gaining new skills through two Getty-funded training programs as part of the MOSAIKON initiative. One current program supported by the Foundation is taking place in Southern France at the Musée de l'Arles et de la Provence Antique and includes conservation training for mosaics professionals from Algeria, Lebanon, and Egypt. A second program happening in Turkey at the ancient site of Ephesus is the culmination of five years of successive training modules organized by the Centro di Conservazione Archeologica based outside of Rome. Both programs are bringing professionals out of the region for sustained training as a way to respond productively to ongoing unrest and move MOSAIKON activities forward in the face of great uncertainty. The Foundation's support is allowing participants to engage deeply in building their skills and form stronger professional connections with peers from other countries.

CAA-Getty International Program Brings Together Diverse Scholars

Getty grantees were strongly represented at this year's College Art Association (CAA) meeting in Washington, D.C. back in early February. A pre-conference workshop brought together fifteen international scholars supported by the Foundation as part of the CAA-Getty International Program. Now in its fifth year, this series of grants is allowing art historians from countries around the world to attend the conference, establishing new intellectual networks. The Foundation is also seeing a long-term impact of these grants, as earlier alumni of the program return to the conference and give presentations or organize sessions. The program benefits not only the individual scholars, but brings new perspectives to U.S.-based members of CAA.

New Feather Art Publication

They say good things come to those who wait. Images Take Flight is a comprehensive new resource on Aztec feather art from 1400-1700 that grew out of a Getty Collaborative Research Grant awarded 15 years ago. The grant to the University of Trier supported collaborative work among scholars Gerhard Wolf, Diana Fane, and Alessandra Russo. The team's research was first presented in a 2011 exhibition at the National Museum of Art (MUNAL) in Mexico City, and now concludes with the recently-released publication featuring 500 pages of collected essays by 33 scholars with 350 color illustrations.
