Connecting Art Histories Comes to the Villa

Reserve your ticket today for a lecture by archaeologist Susan Walker of the Ashmolean Museum on recent finds from Roman Britain and the persistence of local taste for color and pattern at the Getty Villa on May 21. Newly Restored Rubens Panels Make Triumphant Debut

A suite of newly restored finished oil sketches that was one of the most important commissions of Peter Paul Rubens' career recently went on view at the Prado Museum, thanks in part to a Getty grant. Six panels from the Netherlandish artist's Triumph of the Eucharist series were conserved through a training program developed by the Foundation in collaboration with the Prado as part of the Panel Paintings Initiative. Initially threatened by surface cracking and splits in the wooden support, the paintings underwent a thorough treatment and are currently on display in Madrid before traveling to the Getty later this fall.

Dutch Paintings Go Digital

The National Gallery of Art (NGA) has launched the latest OSCI publication, Dutch Paintings of the Seventeenth Century. The release provides an updated and expanded digital version of Arthur K. Wheelock Jr.'s original catalogue, featuring a customized reading environment, a sophisticated image comparison tool, and new multimedia content, including a series of video tours of the Dutch paintings galleries led by Wheelock. In other OSCI news, Seattle Art Museum's catalogue of Chinese paintings and calligraphy received honorable mention for the Museums and the Web 2014 "Best of the Web" awards in the Research/Collections Online category. Links to these and other OSCI publications are available on the Foundation's website.

Getty Grant Brings International Scholars to Chicago

While the polar vortex raged outside, a decidedly warmer gathering took place indoors at the 2014 College Art Association annual conference in Chicago where international scholars from 20 countries came together as part of a Foundation grant. Participants were invited to a special preconference on global art history and paired with mentors in their subfields. Now in its third year, the program has engendered a close network of alumni, and three former fellows returned this year to deliver papers at the conference.
