PST: LA/LA Opens throughout Southern California

This fall, the Foundation launched one of its largest local initiatives to date, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, with over seventy exhibitions throughout Southern California—from Santa Barbara to San Diego, and Los Angeles to Palm Springs. This far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles was five years in the making and supported by Foundation grants for research, exhibitions, publications, and public programs. Although most of the PST: LA/LA exhibitions feature modern and contemporary art, a few also delve into ancient or colonial history. More than 1,000 artists from over 40 countries are included in this massive collaboration, and their artworks represent a wide array of styles, themes, and media. PST: LA/LA will culminate in a performance art festival in January 2018.

25 Years of Undergraduate Interns

The Foundation recently released a twenty-fifth anniversary report about its Multicultural Undergraduate Internship program, featuring in-depth stories of seven former interns who have pursued careers in the visual arts. As part of its continuing commitment to alumni of the internship program, the Foundation is also supporting professional development programs for former interns, including an October 28 program in downtown Los Angeles called Empowering Pathways organized by the Getty Leadership Institute. The one-day workshop will include discussions on diversity and inclusion, leadership development, and new pathways for building capacity and sustainability for the next generation of leaders in the field.

Graduate Interns

In mid-September, the Foundation welcomed the 2017–2018 Graduate Interns to the Getty. This program managed by the Foundation offers positions each year in the four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust—the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Research Institute, the Getty Conservation Institute, and the Getty Foundation, as well as in Getty Publications—to graduate students who intend to pursue careers in fields related to the visual arts. As is typical for this international program, this year's class of thirty-one interns hails from nine different countries and various states across the US. The deadline to apply for next year is quickly approaching on November 1, 2017.

New Connecting Art Histories Grants

The Foundation has awarded two new grants focused on ancient art in the greater Mediterranean as part of its Connecting Art Histories initiative. The Many Lives of Ancient Monuments, organized through the University of California, Berkeley, brings together early-career researchers and international experts at Aphrodisias and other sites in Turkey to consider the "long lives" of ancient monuments that often evolved over time. Meanwhile, Material Entanglements in the Ancient Mediterranean and Beyond, organized through Johns Hopkins University, includes research seminars in Greece, where early-career researchers from the Mediterranean region will join senior specialists to study new approaches to the interpretation of ancient Near Eastern art.
