This course will take place at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles from July 14 to August 1, 2014. Class will be held Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants can expect occasional site visits for study outside of class time and minor adjustment in hours.

The institute will enroll 15 participants by competitive application. First consideration will be given to advanced graduate students and junior faculty at U.S. colleges and universities, but applications are also accepted from advanced graduate students and junior faculty at Canadian institutions, from professional staff of U.S. and Canadian libraries and museums, and from qualified independent scholars.

Prerequisite: This graduate-level course is taught entirely in Italian; advanced language skills are required.

Participants will receive a stipend of $900; nonlocal participants may receive reimbursement of up to an additional $2,400 for travel and housing. There are no fees associated with the institute.

Part 2:
Applicants must have one confidential letter of recommendation forwarded via e-mail ( to the Getty Foundation by 5:00 p.m. (PDT) March 3, 2014. Recommenders should attach a scanned original letter to the e-mail (preferred) or may provide the recommendation in the body of the e-mail. In all cases, letters of recommendation must come directly from the recommender's e-mail account, must clearly indicate the applicant's name and "Mellon Institute" in the subject line, and must include the recommender's name and title.

The letter should address the substance of the applicant's research plans. If the candidate is a graduate student, the recommender should also provide an assessment of his or her level of competence in Italian speaking and reading since the institute will be a graduate-level course taught entirely in Italian.
