Getty Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate University
On January 5, 2010, the Getty Leadership Institute (GLI) moved to Claremont Graduate University (CGU), supported by a three-year, $2.2 million grant from the Getty Foundation in Los Angeles. During its 25 year association with the Getty, GLI continually sought out new ideas. The move to CGU offered GLI the opportunity to expand and thrive as a leading international source of continuing professional development for current and future museum leaders in the context of a unique institution of higher education. The Institute is now known as The Getty Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate University (GLI at CGU). Read full press release on the initial move.
In 2012 the Getty Foundation provided a three-year grant of $1.95 million to CGU for continued support of the GLI through 2015. The grant also supports a re-envisioning of the institute's programs and curriculum to ensure that GLI at CGU remains at the forefront of developing innovative leadership programs for art museum professionals. In 2013 the GLI at CGU announced new leadership to take over following the retirement of longtime director Phil Nowlen in 2012. Melody Kanschat, former president and COO of LACMA, will serve as executive director, drawing on her expertise in non-profit capacity building and art museums to lead the GLI through a restructuring and reinvention, working with the Drucker School and other partners in the sector.
