Books of hours were the bestsellers of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Nearly 60 of these opulent prayer books have come to Los Angeles for the first time in this exhibition drawn from the collection of The Pierpont Morgan Library in New York.

The companion exhibition A Masterpiece Reconstructed: The Hours of Louis XII reunites surviving text and illuminated images from one the most beautiful French books ever made.

Visit on Thursday, November 10, for a lecture by Morgan Library curator William Voelkle on the Farnese Hours, the most famous manuscript of the Italian Renaissance.

Julius Shulman, Modernity and the Metropolis
through January 22, 2006

Julius Shulman's photographs celebrate the elegant geometry of modern architecture and the glamour of the California dream.

Drawn from the newly acquired Julius Shulman photography archive in the special collections of the Research Library at the Getty Research Institute, this exhibition presents dramatic photographs of buildings by pioneering modern architects, as well as images of L.A.'s unique urban landscape—movie palaces, gas stations, shopping malls.

Delve further into modernism with a lecture by architectural historian Sylvia Lavin on Thursday, November 3. Call (310) 440-7300 for reservations and information.
