Explore the world of negative space in this fascinating exhibition of masterful drawings. Discover how artists such as Rembrandt, Boucher, Seurat, and Klimt deliberately left areas of paper blank to create the illusion of light and form, using absence to evoke a sense of presence. Curator Stephanie Schrader pairs haiku with select drawings in this exhibition, enhancing the artful restraint of the works.

Werner Herzog: Hearsay of the Soul
Through January 19 | The Getty Center

Step into a unique and immersive five-channel video installation by celebrated German filmmaker Werner Herzog that is both intimate and epic. Originally commissioned for the 2012 Whitney Biennial, this richly layered work juxtaposes enigmatic vistas of early-17th-century Dutch artist Hercules Segers with expressive scores and performances by contemporary cellist and experimental composer Ernst Reijseger.

Experience the infectious rhythms of La Santa Cecilia. Named for the patron saint of music, this bicultural band has deep roots in L.A.'s immigrant community. Their dance-friendly and rich mélange of rock, funk, cumbia, punk, samba, son jarocho, and klezmer complements singer La Marisoul's sunny vocals. Treinta Días, their new album, balances social consciousness with their exuberant sound. Free; no reservations required.

Bringing the Loom to Life: An Introduction to Van Gogh's Weavers

Explore Van Gogh's weaver paintings that reveal his fascination with and understanding of color theory, something he later mastered in paintings such as Irises. Devi Ormond, associate paintings conservator at the J. Paul Getty Museum, examines this and Van Gogh's early interest in the peasant genre as seen in his works depicting weavers. Kicking off this summer's all-star season of Garden Concerts for Kids, the rollicking Okee Dokee Brothers perform bluegrass-rock for kids from their Grammy-winning album Can You Canoe?. Next, sing along with Recess Monkey, the eclectic kindie-band of elementary-school teachers who dazzle with catchy hooks and melodies. Then, acclaimed American folk–songstress Elizabeth Mitchell brings everyone into her family circle with authentic and fresh interpretations of old favorites and unexpected gems. Free!
