The exhibition Hatched! Creating Form with Line features some of the Getty Museum's most powerful drawings, by artists as diverse as Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent van Gogh. Hatching is one of the most basic and timeless artistic techniques, and can create the illusion of three-dimensional solidity on a two-dimensional sheet of paper. Extremely versatile, it can also be used to give the impression of movement or speed.

After exploring the exhibition, adapt the lesson "Looking at Portraits: Portraits in Line" and work with your students in grades 6–12 to learn about portraits and the technique of hatching and cross-hatching.
