An Object's Journey to the Museum

Find Lessons

Retrace the lives of a lidded bowl, a silver fountain, a side chair, and a wall light.

By examining physical cues on these objects, the exhibition The Life of Art uncovers intimate connections to people, places, and institutions.

The award-winning companion iPad app to the exhibition–also available for free online–features stunning photography, animations, video, and 360-degree rotations that bring the rich biographies of these objects to life.

Adapt the lesson below to examine the lidded bowl in the exhibition and consider how its original use has been changed to create a new object with a new function.

Lesson plan: New Forms from Old

Exhibition: The Life of Art: Context, Collecting, and Display is on view at the Getty Center.
