Edgar Allan Poe / Unknown

Artists have represented people in portraits for thousands of years, capturing historical figures as well as individuals from everyday life. These images prompt us to ask questions about who these people are and why they have had their image captured for others to see and contemplate.

Explore portraiture with your class and discover ways to engage your students in the investigation and creation of portraits. Designed for elementary and secondary teachers, these materials prompt discussion and activities about portraits. The six portraits included are in various mediums and were chosen for their potential as teaching tools in the classroom.

Lesson plans were developed in relation to visual-arts and language-arts content areas for elementary and secondary students. In the Image Bank you will find additional suggested questions and activities for use with the images that can be adapted to different grade levels and particular classrooms.
