Colbert (1619–1683) served as the French minister of finance for 22 years, under Louis XIV. He is notable for his work at improving the state of French manufacturing and bringing the economy out of bankruptcy. Colbert worked to create a favorable balance of trade and to increase France's colonial holdings.
