Scribes Wanted!

Visit the Getty Villa to see the Cyrus Cylinder and bring your family to the Outer Peristyle garden to learn about "cuneiform," an ancient form of writing. Kids and parents can try their hand at writing on clay slabs with styluses, much like ancient scribes. You can take your ancient proclamation home with you!

Offered in conjunction with the exhibition The Cyrus Cylinder and Ancient Persia: A New Beginning.

Over 2,500 years ago, Cyrus the Great, king of Persia, conquered the city of Babylon. Unlike other conquerors, he did not force the city to take up the customs of his people. Instead, he assured them of his respect for their way of life. The Cyrus Cylinder, written by his royal scribes in an ancient script called "cuneiform," announced his intention to uphold their traditions. The Cylinder is considered an iconic discovery of an ancient ruler's respect for human rights.
