Sam Francis: The Artist's Materials

American artist Sam Francis (1923–1994) brought vivid color and emotional intensity to Abstract Expressionism. His idiosyncratic painting practices have long been the subject of speculation and debate among conservators and art historians. Presented here for the first time in this volume are the results of an in-depth scientific study of more than forty paintings, which reveal new information about his creative process.

Art on the Rocks
Engaging the Public and Professionals to Network for Rock Art Conservation

Le Corbusier's Three Museums: A workshop on their care and conservation

In February 2018, the GCI convened a meeting with the representatives from the three museums designed by Le Corbusier—the Sanskar Kendra (Ahmedabad, India, 1954), the National Museum of Western Art (Tokyo, Japan, 1959), and the Government Museum and Art Gallery (Chandigarh, India, 1960)—along with a representative from the Fondation Le Corbusier. This publication reports on the activities and discussions developed during the workshop, which was focused on the challenges of balancing building conservation and a collection's needs.

Concrete: Case Studies in Conservation Practice

Project Updates


Conservation and Management of the Tomb of Tutankhamen

The GCI has reached an important milestone with the completion of almost a decade of research, conservation efforts, and infrastructure improvements at the Tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt. Findings from this project—a multi-year collaboration between the GCI and Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities—were presented at a symposium on January 31 in Luxor.

Cleaning of Gilded Surfaces

The GCI is developing a project on cleaning systems for wooden gilded surfaces and is interested to hear from conservators who work on gilded wood—from frames to furniture to architectural elements. If you work in this area, please take a moment to answer our survey. Your responses will help us better assess needs within the field and identify appropriate cleaning systems. Preserving Collections in the Age of Sustainability, 2019

A Three-Phase Course

Intensive workshop: September 30–October 11, 2019 at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia
Distance mentoring: Beginning November 2019 (six months)

Managing collection environments while providing long-term access to cultural materials requires a complex set of technical, analytical, and social skills. This innovative course brings together different disciplines, emerging knowledge, and the skills required to communicate and build consensus on the most appropriate approaches for climate control. It will provide up-to-date information that puts theory into practice and connects with participants' own working contexts by drawing on their experiences and by fostering continued learning through distance mentoring.

Object Lessons: The Panza Collection Initiative Symposium

April 9-10, 2019
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York

The symposium, organized by the Guggenheim and the Getty Conservation Institute, is the culminating event of The Panza Collection Initiative. This multiyear research project focused on the long-term preservation and future exhibition of Minimalist, Post-Minimalist, and Conceptual art acquired by the Guggenheim from Italian collectors Giovanna and Giuseppe Panza di Biumo. A small exhibition of key works from the Panza Collection, with accompanying documents and working drawings, will be open exclusively to symposium attendees, featuring works by Donald Judd, Bruce Nauman, Robert Morris, and Dan Flavin.

The latest titles added to the Conservation Collection in the Research Library at the Getty Research Institute include works ranging from Gothic sculpture to heritage patterns and colors to Bruegel. Some of these materials are available through the library's interlibrary loan service.
