Team member David Saunders, curator at the J. Paul Getty Museum, directed the selection of sherds (pottery fragments) for inclusion in the study. To refine the analytical approach, the initial study group consisted of a selection of sherds from the archaic period (late 6th and early 5th centuries BCE).

The study set was subsequently expanded to include sherds representing multiple artists/workshops operating concurrently, then to include artists/workshops across the timeline from the 6th to the 4th centuries BCE.
