Using the techniques of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS), available at the Getty Conservation Institute, the elemental composition of the different painted gloss components on selected sherds was being measured and correlations to artists, time period, and decoration component evaluated.

This work was directed by Marc Walton, co-principal investigator, with the help of postdoctoral and graduate researchers.
