Day/Night (outdoor sculpture; Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap-of-Birds (Cheyenne/Arapaho installa...; 1991; Seattle (King, Washington, United States, North and Central ...)
Note: Built to memoralize Chief Seattle (ca. 1786-1866) and his efforts to protect Duwamish lifeways. The work's title refers to his famous speech in 1854 or 1855, describing the current and future tensions between Indigenous people and settlers. Located in Pioneer Square, Seattle, Washington, the work consists of two ceramic panels located on either side of a bronze bust of Chief Seattle. The panels are inscribed with text, reading "FAR AWAY BROTHERS AND SISTERS WE STILL REMEMBER YOU/CHIEF SEATTLE NOW THE STREETS ARE OUR HOME," in Lushootseed on one side and English on the other. Patterns of crosses and dollar signs cascade from the top of one panel while abstract, organic shapes fall down the other.
