Note: Hals was renowned as one of the great portrait painters in Haarlem at this time, painting portraits of clients but also also painting common people as portraits. In this portrait-like genre scene, the artist paints with the immediacy of a sketch a folk figure, who is both witch (symbolized by the owl) and "villiage idiot."

Herstellungsort: Haarlem (Stadt); Die auf der Schulter von der „Malle Babbe“ sitzende Eule darf wohl als Symbol der Trunksucht gelesen werden und auf die zeitgenössische Redewendung »zoo beschonken als een uil« (so betrunken wie eine Eule) anspielen. Als Personifizierung eines vergleichbar verurteilenswerten Lasters – dem Rauchen - wurde die „Malle Babbe“ auch auf dem Berliner Bild „Wie die Alten sungen, so pfeifen die Jungen“ von Jan Steen aufgenommen (Kat.Nr. 795D).
