Note: Iconic lighthouse located on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks in the town of Buxton, North Carolina. The current tower, dating from 1870, is well known for its black and white spiral bands with red brick base with granite corners. After years of being threatened by the encroaching sea, in the 1999 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was moved from its original location at the edge of the ocean to safer ground 2,900 feet inland, and 1,500 feet from the shoreline.
