Poèmes de Charles d'Orléans (unbound volume; Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954); print publisher: Ténade, ...; 1950; Portland Art Museum (Portland, Multnomah county, Oregon, Uni...; 2008.3;)
Note: Matisse often turned to poetry for artistic inspiration, and he illustrated a number of livres d’artistes of verse, from the medieval to the modern. To illustrate the work of Charles d’Orléans (1391-1465), a member of the royal family and the father of French lyric poetry of courtly love, Matisse used a highly decorative style: he wrote the poems out in his own florid handwriting and used recurrent scrolls, garlands, and fleur-de-lis.
