Note: Cathedral for the Church of England Diocese of Newcastle. The Norman Roman Catholic parish church was founded in 1091, destroyed by fire in 1216. Current building reconstructed in 1350 in the Perpendicular style. The tower dates to the 15th century; served as navigation landmark for ships using the River Tyne. Buiding was heavily restored in 1777. The Cathedral has been the seat of the Bishop of Newcastle since 1882, when it became known as the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas..
