Wu Family Shrines (assemblage (archaeological artifacts); various artists, unknown Han; Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE); Shandong (Zhongguo, Asia, World, Top of the TGN hierarchy); )
Note: Assemblage of pictorial stones, steles, gate-pillars, and chambers, noted for carved images of legendary rulers, heroes, historical and mythological narratives, and other scenes. Items have been brought together and dispersed variously over the centuries. Traditionally dated to the mid-second century during the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE) the pictorial stone carvings, and the rubbings made from them, have been recognized since the Song dynasty (960-1279) as some of the most valuable and authentic materials for the study of Chinese antiquity. The name derives from four memorial steles that were said to be dedicated to four males of the Wu family, for which the entire assemblage was then named.
