Note: Sculpture of heavenly king. Tasked with guarding the four quarters of the Buddhist universe, the four martial deities known as Heavenly Kings (lokapāla) frequently appear at the thresholds of Buddhist painting and sculptural programs. Smaller than most grotto sculpture and carved from joined wood blocks instead of built up from straw and clay on a wooden armature, these lokapāla may have been displayed in a temple rather than a cave.
