Five-Figure Buddha Group Stencil (pounce (image-making stencil); unknown Northern Song dynasty; ca. 926/975; British Museum (London, Greater London, England, United King...; 1919,0101,0.72 (ch.00159))
Note: From Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Unusually large and complex pricked stencil (or pounce). Recto depicts a Buddha seated in the middle surrounded by two monks and two bodhisattvas. Only the Buddha and the monk and bodhisattva on his right side were drawn in ink. The paper was then folded over and holes pricked through both layers. Their connection to cave production remains tentative, but pricked stencils yield significant evidence of their own production processes.
