Note: Fragments from the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang: Located in the western Chinese province of Gansu, the city of Dunhuang was an important stop along the Silk Road. On the outskirts of the city are the Mogao Caves, where Buddhist paintings and sculptures cover the walls and ceilings of hundreds of chambers excavated from rock cliffs. Among the works of art are numerous Buddhas, apsaras (celestial maidens), and disciples, including Ananda, a devout attendant of the Buddha.
