Washington Monument (national monument; Robert Mills (American architect, 1781-1855); 1848-1885)
Note: Monument dedicated to American president George Washington (1732-1799). Construction of the monument was marked by the laying of the cornerstone on July 4, 1848. For the centennial of the Declaration of Independence in 1876, the task to complete the structure was given to the Corps of Engineers, and the foundations were redone as the monument was already leaning. The capstone was set in 1884 and the monument dedicated on February 21, 1885.
