Note: Houses collections of the Louvre museum. Was long the seat of power, a royal residence and then home to French heads of state until 1870. On the site of a medieval fortress, in 1546, Francis I renovated the site in French Renaissance style, also founding the royal collections that included works by Leonardo, Raphael, and Titian. Louis XIV developed of the site and collections, including in 1661 much of the Mazarin Collection. Archeological excavations conducted the 1980s have helped establish the history of the site, occupied since prehistoric times. Located in: Paris, France; Medieval.
