Female Figure of the Kilia Type (statuette (figurine); unknown Near Eastern (Anatolian); 4500/3500 BCE; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 88.AA.122)
Note: Female figures were made throughout the Aegean basin during the prehistoric period, including in the region of ancient Anatolia (present-day Turkey). This figure is an early example, predating related figures of the Cycladic region. She represents a highly stylized standing nude female. Her bulbous head, long neck, and flat body are characteristic of the Kilia type of female figurines, named after the village in Turkey where the first examples were found. The facial features are only schematically rendered, but areas such as the eyes would originally have been enhanced by paint. The ears and nose, by contrast, are defined by carving. Chalcolithic female figures were probably connected with the cult of a fertility goddess; on this example, the pubic area is emphasized by incision.
