Three Peonies (painting (visual work); Yün Shou-p'ing (1633-1690) painter; Wang Hui (1632-1717) cal...; Qing dynasty; National Palace Museum (Taipei, Taibei, Taiwan); 04000985;)
Note: This leaf comes from "Album of Flowers and Landscapes." Three peonies are distinguished by their colors and positions. The peony is considered the king of flowers in China, symbolizing wealth and prosperity. Using the "boneless" method of washes, the composition depicts three stalks with peony blossoms; one is red, one white, and the other purple. They are also shown in a variety of poses: from the front, side, and back. A fresh and outstanding character exudes from the gorgeous beauty of their bright colors, creating a lofty and otherworldly atmosphere. At the left is an inscription by Wang Hui, offering high praise for Yun Shouping, claiming that he surpassed Chen Chun and Lu Zhi of the Ming dynasty and was comparable to the Northern Song masters.
