Venus de Milo (statue; Alexandros of Antioch (Greek sculptor, active ca. 100 BCE); ca. 100 BCE; Louvre Museum (Paris, Île-de-France, France); LL 299;)
Note: Famous statute probably the work of Alexandros of Antioch on the Maeander. The artist’s name was incised on a block of stone that was found together with the Venus, but was later lost. Scholarly debate cast doubt on the connection between the block and the statue, attributing the work to Praxiteles, and the loss of the inscribed block may have been engineered to support this theory. The statue was found in 1820 in two pieces along with other fragments, on the island of Melos. It was then purchased by the Marquis de Rivière, who donated it to Louis XVIII, King of France. Before it was donated to the Musée du Louvre in 1821, it was hastily repaired for quick display, prompting another restoration in 1875. It has never been fully restored, perhaps because of the disparity of opinions regarding its original state. Much debate has ensued over the statues missing arms. While some scholars thought it was a victorious Venus holding the apple of Paris in her hand, others favoured the hypothesis that the statue was a sort of guardian divinity of the island, who would also be holding a fruit, perhaps an apple, as her attribute.
