Note: The Statue of Liberty is a colossal copper statue sculpture located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, in New York City. A gift from the people of France to the United States, it was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel. The Statue of Liberty is a female allegorical figire of the Roman goddess Libertas.She holds a torch above her head, and in her left arm carries a tablet inscribed "July 4, 1776 lies at her feet. She is considered an icon of freedom and of the United States, and a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving from abroad. Various portions of the statue were exhibited before its completion, with the torch-bearing arm displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, and the statue's head on exhibit at the Paris World's Fair, 1878. The statue's was completed in 1886, and dedicated at New York's first ticker-tape parade by President Grover Cleveland. Since 1933, the statue has been maintained by the National Park Service. Public access to the torch balcony in 1916, due to it sagging from tourism.
