Forbidden City (palace complex; Yongle Emperor (Chinese emperor and patron, 1360-1424); first occupied in 1420)
Note: Chinese imperial palace complex located in Beijing, China; the walled complex comprises a vast system of courtyards, connecting gates, ceremonial halls, and elaborate imperial living quarters. Commissioned in 1406 by the Yongle emperor of the Ming dynasty, it is so named because access was denied to most of the subjects of the realm, it was first officially occupied by the court in 1420. The compound was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.
