The Pastoral Concert (painting (visual work); Titian (Venetian painter and draftsman, ca. 1488-1576); attr...; 1510; Louvre Museum (Paris, Île-de-France, France); INV. 71;)
Note: Variously attributed to Giorgione, Bellini, Sebastiano del Piombo, and Palma Vecchio, The Pastoral Concert is now considered a work of a young Titian, who was Giorgione’s pupil. A mysterious painting, its precise meaning has posed difficulties for art historians. It is most probably an allegory of Poetry, whose symbols - the flute and the pouring water - are shared between the two idealized nudes. These unreal figures only inhabit the imaginations of the two men they inspire, in keeping with the Venetian desire for simultaneous depictions of the visible and invisible popular at the time of the painting’s creation.
