Fountain (sculpture (visual works); Marcel Duchamp (French painter, sculptor, and writer, 1887-1...; 1917)
Note: In April 1917, Duchamp sent a urinal to the first exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists at the Grand Central Palace in New York. He titled it "Fountain" and signed in "R. Mutt/1917." The object caused a sensation and was rejected by the committee, even though the rules stated that all works would be accepted from anyone who paid the entrance fee. Fountain was displayed and photographed at Alfred Stieglitz's studio, and the photo published in The Blind Man, but the original has been lost. Some legends attest that the work was purposefully broken. The work is regarded by some art historians and theorists of the avant-garde as a major landmark of Modern art, signifying the shift toward conceptually. Replicas were commissioned by Duchamp in the 1960s, and several now are on display in a number of different museums.
