L'Ellipse (multi-channel video installation; Pierre Huyghe (French, born 1962); 1998; Sammlung Goetz (Munich, Bavaria, Germany))
Note: Huyghe was an innovator of the “post-production” technique, reusing existing mass media, such as films, to create new art. In the triple-screen projection L'Ellipse (1998), he slowed a jump cut from Wim Wenders's 1977 film The American Friend and expanded it by adding his own footage. Huyghe creates new footage for a scene from Wim Wender’s 1977 film The American Friend that illustrates the main character walking between locations excised in the original film with a jump cut. Twenty years later, the same actor takes a stroll through the streets of Paris, effectively filling the gap in Wender’s film. In the triple projection installation, the new footage is flanked on either side with the original film’s preceding scene to the left and the scene following the jump cut to the right.
